CHAPTER 32
They lay in the quiet of her bedroom in each otherâs arms.
Karina was almost too frightened to break the silence as she thought over what had happened that night.
Gabriel arriving at her door had taken her off guard. She had quickly pulled herself together and realised this was what they had been planning for. What she had planned for. But, as she had invited him in, what she hadnât planned for was the huge chemistry that was passing between them. It had been there the night she had met him in the 400 Club and it was why she had gone back to Claridgeâs with him. It had been there in the back of her mind when she had met him in Great Hankerton Hall. But she had been so shocked at seeing him again and fearing exposure that she had suppressed the feeling. And it had been there during the brief conversation she had with him at the American ambassadorâs. The difference was that on the last two occasions there had been other people about and so the sexual feeling she had for him had been somewhat diluted.
But there that night in her flat it had bubbled to the surface. Suddenly she was in danger of blowing the whole plan. Instead of gently leading him into her web, she had been hostile to him and he had nearly walked out.
It had never been her plan to go to bed with him again. She was sure it might have been in Emily and Kendrickâs plan if the situation arose, but never hers. As she watched him sleeping beside her, she felt sorry for him. He had no idea he was a pawn in their game. There was a sweet or sour way of doing everything, and luckily this infiltration was to be done the sweet way. She would meet him regularly, bring him into her confidence and find out everything they needed to know. Gabriel Ford would be putty in her hands. As she looked at him, she felt the tremendous attraction she had for him. She knew he felt the same for her. She wondered if this lust could have led to something else ⦠if they had met in different circumstance. But that was all it was, lust on both their parts and a means to an end for her. Hugo would never need to know about this. But she had promised herself she would do anything to rescue him and going to bed with Gabriel Ford was not a particularly difficult thing to do.
She gently moved his arm from around her and slipped out of bed. Putting on her long silk dressing gown, she looked down at him for a minute and then crept from the room. It was half past six in the morning and growing light outside. She went into the kitchen, put on the kettle and waited for it to boil before making herself a cup of tea. She then went into the sitting room, pulled back the curtains and lit herself a cigarette.
